چکیده

We demonstrate the fabrication of magnetically assembled one-dimensional chain-like photonic nanostructures with significantly high photonic stability. The key lies in the use of agarose hydrogel to prevent the magnetic assemblies from coagulation. When exposed to an external magnetic field, negatively charged Fe3O4@SiO2 particles can effectively assemble in the hydrogel matrix into onedimensional chains with internal periodicity and display a fast, fully reversible, and tunable photonic response to the changes in the external field. The steric hindrance and the hydrogen bonding from the agarose network effectively limit the migration of the Fe3O4@SiO2 particles and their chain-like assemblies. As a result, the system shows remarkable stability in photonic response under external magnetic fields of large gradients, which has been a challenge previously. The ability of stabilizing the magnetic particle assemblies over a long period represents a major stride toward practical applications of such field-responsive photonic materials.

Temperature Tunability of Dielectric/ Liquid Crystal / Dielectric Photonic Crystal Structures

Recently, photonic crystals doped with liquid crystal (LC) material havegained much research interest. In this article new ternary one-dimensional photoniccrystal introduced and studied. The liquid crystal layer of 5CB and 5PCH is sandwichedby two dielectric layers. For the first time, we use four structures SiO2/UCF35/CaF2,SiO2/5CB/CaF2, NFK51/UCF35/NPSK53 and NFK51/5CB/NPSK53. The effect ofte...

Strain-tunable Photonic Band Gap Microcavity Waveguides at 1.55 μm Personnel

Concept and Key Idea Photonic-bandgap microcavities in optical waveguides have demonstrated cavity resonances at wavelengths near 1.55 μm band, quality factors on the order of 300, and modal volume at 0.055 μm3 in high-index contrast Si/SiO2 waveguides and GaAs air-bridge waveguides. Applications include zero-threshold microlasers, filters and signal routers. For tunability in Si microphotonic ...

Remote Manipulation of Droplets on a Flexible Magnetically Responsive Film

The manipulation of droplets is used in a wide range of applications, from lab-on-a-chip devices to bioinspired functional surfaces. Although a variety of droplet manipulation techniques have been proposed, active, fast and reversible manipulation of pure discrete droplets remains elusive due to the technical limitations of previous techniques. Here, we describe a novel technique that enables a...

Mechano-actuated ultrafast full-colour switching in layered photonic hydrogels.

Photonic crystals with tunability in the visible region are of great interest for controlling light diffraction. Mechanochromic photonic materials are periodically structured soft materials designed with a photonic stop-band that can be tuned by mechanical forces to reflect specific colours. Soft photonic materials with broad colour tunability and fast colour switching are invaluable for applic...
